Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and reliable Laundry In Charge to join a private household team, overseeing all laundry, linen and wardrobe care for family members and guests. The successful candidate will manage daily laundry operations, supervise any junior laundry staff, ensure high standards of garment and textile care, and maintain inventory and quality control for linens and clothing. This role requires excellent technical textile knowledge, organisational ability, discretion and a professional approach suitable for a private residence.
Key Responsibilities
Take full responsibility for the day-to-day management of laundry operations, including washing, drying, ironing, pressing, steaming, folding and packing of garments and household linens to an exceptionally high standard.
Supervise, train and schedule junior laundry staff and external laundry contractors where applicable; ensure consistent adherence to household standards, safety procedures and confidentiality.
Assess fabrics and garments to determine appropriate cleaning methods (machine wash, hand wash, dry clean) and select correct detergents, solvents and temperature settings to avoid damage.
Manage professional care for delicate textiles, couture garments, uniforms, leather items and specialised fabrics; liaise with external specialist cleaners and tailors as required.
Operate, maintain and perform routine checks on laundry equipment (washers, dryers, irons, steamers, presses); report faults promptly and coordinate repairs or servicing.
Maintain accurate records of laundry requests, garment histories, cleaning schedules and items sent to external providers; ensure secure handling and tracking of owner and guest garments.
Inspect laundered items for quality control, finishing standards and any required mending or alterations; arrange repairs, tailoring or stain treatment as necessary.
Oversee linen and wardrobe inventory, rotation and replenishment; ensure linens and uniforms are laundered, pressed and stored according to household protocols and presentation standards.
Prepare clear handover notes and communicate effectively with household staff regarding laundry schedules, special garment care instructions and guest requirements.
Maintain a clean, organised and safe laundry workspace, following health and safety guidelines and correct storage of chemical products; ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Manage budgets and supplier relationships for laundry consumables, equipment and external services; report when replenishment or replacements are required.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum of 2 years’ professional experience in laundry management, textile care, housekeeping or a similar role within private households, luxury hotels, or specialist cleaning services.
Experience supervising staff and coordinating with external laundry suppliers and specialist service providers.
Strong attention to detail with excellent finishing and quality-control skills; ability to identify stains, fabric damage and necessary repairs.
Good record-keeping skills and the ability to manage inventories, schedules and household laundry systems.
Physically fit and able to perform manual tasks, including lifting, carrying and extended periods of standing; comfortable operating laundry machinery and equipment.
Excellent communication skills with a polite, discreet and professional manner suited to a private household environment.
High level of reliability, time-management and organisational ability; capable of maintaining confidentiality at all times.
Basic health and safety awareness, including safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals; training or certifications in textile care or laundry operations are desirable.
