Job Summary
The successful candidate will maintain public areas to ensure a clean, safe, welcoming and well-presented environment for customers, guests, visitors and colleagues. The role requires strong attention to detail, reliability and customer service skills, with the ability to clean, inspect and maintain public spaces in a professional and timely manner.
Key Responsibilities
Public Area Cleaning and Maintenance
· Clean and maintain public areas including entrances, lobbies, corridors, lifts, stairways, washrooms and communal spaces.
· Ensure public areas are presented to a consistently high standard throughout the day.
· Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, polish and sanitise floors, surfaces, fixtures and fittings as required.
· Clean glass, mirrors, doors, furniture, signage, decorative items and other public area features.
· Empty bins, remove waste and replace liners in accordance with company procedures.
· Replenish washroom and public area supplies, including soap, paper products, sanitiser and other consumables.
· Complete scheduled deep cleaning, periodic cleaning and additional tasks as directed.
Inspections and Quality Standards
· Conduct regular checks of public areas to identify cleaning, maintenance, presentation or safety requirements.
· Respond promptly to spills, stains, breakages, odours and other issues affecting the cleanliness or safety of public spaces.
· Maintain appropriate standards of cleanliness, hygiene, appearance and presentation at all times.
· Follow cleaning schedules, checklists and established procedures accurately.
· Report maintenance defects, damaged fixtures, faulty equipment and other concerns to the appropriate manager.
· Support inspections, audits and quality checks and take corrective action where required.
Customer Service and Communication
· Provide polite, professional and helpful service to customers, guests, visitors and colleagues.
· Respond appropriately to customer requests, questions and feedback and refer matters to the relevant team member when necessary.
· Maintain a professional appearance and conduct while working in customer-facing areas.
· Communicate cleaning, maintenance, safety and service issues clearly and promptly.
· Respect customer privacy, personal belongings and confidential information at all times.
· Work cooperatively with housekeeping, facilities, maintenance, reception, security and other operational teams.
Health, Safety and Compliance
· Follow company cleaning procedures, COSHH requirements, health and safety policies and environmental standards.
· Use cleaning chemicals, equipment and personal protective equipment safely and correctly.
· Store cleaning products, equipment and supplies securely and in accordance with instructions.
· Place warning signs and barriers around wet floors, cleaning activities or other temporary hazards.
· Report accidents, incidents, hazards, spillages, infestations and equipment faults without delay.
· Ensure public areas remain accessible, orderly and free from avoidable hazards.
· Support emergency, evacuation and incident procedures in line with company requirements.
Equipment, Supplies and Waste Management
· Check cleaning equipment before use and report damage, faults or safety concerns promptly.
· Operate vacuum cleaners, floor-care equipment, pressure washers and other cleaning machinery where trained and authorised.
· Monitor stock levels of cleaning materials, toiletries, paper products and other consumables.
· Request replenishment of supplies in accordance with agreed procedures.
· Separate and dispose of waste responsibly, following recycling and environmental procedures.
· Keep cleaning cupboards, stores, trolleys and equipment areas clean, organised and secure.
Administration and Team Support
· Complete cleaning records, inspection sheets, checklists and other operational documentation accurately.
· Record maintenance requests, lost property, incidents and customer concerns in accordance with company procedures.
· Assist with the setup, cleaning and clear-down of areas used for meetings, functions, events or special activities.
· Support the induction and training of new employees or temporary staff where required.
· Maintain effective communication during shift handovers and report outstanding tasks clearly.
· Work flexibly to meet changing operational requirements, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
Qualifications and Experience
· Previous experience in public area cleaning, housekeeping, commercial cleaning, hospitality, facilities or a customer-facing environment is desirable.
· Experience cleaning hotels, offices, leisure facilities, retail premises, public buildings or other high-traffic environments is desirable.
· Knowledge of cleaning methods, hygiene standards, COSHH requirements and safe use of cleaning equipment.
· Good understanding of health and safety requirements in a workplace or public environment.
· A relevant cleaning, housekeeping or facilities qualification is desirable.
· Current health and safety, cleaning or hygiene certification, or willingness to obtain it where required.
· The ability to provide suitable professional references and complete relevant background checks.
